As he was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders approached him and said to him, \u201cBy what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do them?\u201d Jesus said to them, \u201cI shall ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Was John\u2019s baptism of heavenly or of human origin? Answer me.\u201d They discussed this among themselves and said, \u201cIf we say, \u2018Of heavenly origin,\u2019 he will say, \u2018Then why did you not believe him?\u2019 But shall we say, \u2018Of human origin\u2019?\u201d \u2013 they feared the crowd, for they all thought John really was a prophet.
